Reunion
Reunion
I had not seen him for over fifty years
we had planned a reunion after years of letters
In the past, soldiers together, comrades in arms
we were a part of each other's history
Our reunion had been arranged
I arrived early to be greeted by his daughter
Dad has taken the dog for a walk, she said
In the distance I saw him, immediately I knew it was he
I walked up across the field toward him
when in view we both stopped
The dog was filled with consternation and came to see me
Hello mate, I said, do you recognise me
He nodded and we came face to face
I threw my arms around him
We held each other with unconcealed sobs
We cried and held on
Eventually we released our embrace
Overjoyed and incapable of words
we wept and dabbed our tears
Memories flooded back.
We had not lost our bond
He was the same person
I love him beyond words

A moving and atmospheric poem, Keith. I love it.
In a similar vein, I remember that my grandmother lost contact with her sister for forty years (I still don't know how). The reunion was less demonstrative than yours but I remember them, sitting facing each other in deck chairs at the end of my parents' garden, quietly filling in the gaps.
