Only a Week
Only a Week
The microcosm of one week's events
stand out in all the events of history
A glimspe of a few days in time
echo their sounds to the present day
a rapturous welcome of a King
as joyful souls sing their praises
The same souls who within a week
shouted Crucify Him! Crucify Him!
Was such caprice so well condensed
so human as to mood and moment
The prevailing religion planned his demise
as he cleansed and purified their temple
The city heaved with a fervent throng
to carry out pre ordained rituals
A wrongful arrest and false accusations
fuelled by the self righteous of an Institution
No longer do we hear the words Hosannah
but murmurings and conspiracies to kill
The final authority of an occupying power
abdicates his responsibilities and orders
The guilty go free the innocent are condemned
Crucifixion, having found no guilt
the death sentence of a slave or a dissident
Beaten, humiliated, mocked and spat on
he gave no response, not one word uttered
Betrayed by a close friend for cash
denied by another out of fear
Only a solitary black man came to help him
by carrying his burden
Together they saw him nailed and hanged to death
a mother and others stood in helpless grief
The mob cheered, a known thief they freed
the righteous taken to his grave
Then love and hope rose from the ashes
reunited as truth ultimately wins over death
A week of immense passion
awash with human emotion
Victors and vanquished together
were powerless before the face of God
A week we see repeated often during our life times
and over 2000 years
Out of death life is reborn
Hope always lives on
