Always there
April 27th
I began this piece about two week’s ago when the smallest spider I have ever seen appeared on the top of my computer while I was composing another poem. Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt was to take an entry from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows and create a poem from the inspiration. I looked and found Lilo n. a friendship that can lie dormant for years only to pick right back up instantly, as if no time had passed since you last saw each other.
I instantly thought about that little arachnid and a number of friends I have visited recently or plan to be with soon, then edited to a finish this poem which I feel meets the prompt.
By coincidence, a fellow poet and friend intended to post an arachnid based poem today (find it here), so it was rather nice to join him on the day.
Far off in the distance,
A translucent limb gently breaks the magnolia horizon.
Hovering in space, an alien leg from another place.
With a precise heave, it at once enters and leaves,
Its past residence to make its presence,
And waves hello to me.
Two pearlescent orbs held in place by gossamer props,
Eight in all, slender, tender they prevent a fall,
From the computer’s cliff top.
Traction transfers to locomotion,
Choreographed arachnid synchronicity, formidable fragility,
It tangos there with me.
Slipping away as the descendant sun,
My lifelong friend returns to whence she begun.
Out of sight, but not out of mind,
A willowy reminder in the breeze lingers behind.
The finest of hairs for sharp eyes to see,
It signals just for me.

Arachnids are interesting creatures - not least for the variety of their
size and effect - ranging from harmless (to humans) to deadly and
best avoided. They have both inspired and instilled fear. My most
recent memory was seeing one tiny specimen near my bathroom
window suddenly emerge and rush forward to literally wrap a tiny
passing insect in its enveloping thread in what seemed like seconds.
Size is only relevant to the parties and the situation involved ! I'm
glad to live in a benign land which has no dangerous specimens - like
the Brazilian Wandering Spider which is known to run AT people, its
venom being of the nasty necrosis sort that rots the infected flesh.
Meanwhile, armed with a glass and piece of card, I'll keep helping
those more congenial examples I find trapped in the bath ?
