Fasteners of Life
Fasteners of Life
Relationships are strange, uncertain things,
attaching two or maybe more in various ways,
accommodating personalities,
and unexpected eccentricities.
Marriage is a golden cufflink, bringing
two together with an understated flair.
Some have decorations with engraving,
while some are plain that compensate with shine.
Business partnerships behave like rubber bands,
that stretch and twist to fit a given task,
while always wrapped around a stack of cash,
resisting greater stress with greater force.
To have a child creates a bond of permanence,
like stainless staples used in surgery,
designed to hold in perpetuity,
a flesh and blood experience.
Some friendships are short lived and tentative,
much like a zipper in a coat or boot,
that has a purpose meeting some specific need,
but separated without loss or pain.
Close friends are treasures that are kept for life,
like anchor bolts, as memories reunite.
In spite of gaps, they hold with loyalty,
adjusting easily as needs arise.
Each one is different, has its own design,
a fastener of life to hold and bind.
A few get rusty, fracture over time,
because of carelessness and lack of use.
