The Mythical Story Of Devil’s Bridge
How did Devil’s Bridge get its name
is a question still asked today
Here is how the story goes
and what local legend has to say
It’s a tale of an old woman
who came to fetch her cow one day
She arrived at the River Lune
to find her cow had lost its way
It had strayed to the other side
now the river flowed fast and deep
There was no way to get across
she despaired and began to weep
At that moment the Devil appeared
I’ll build you a new bridge he told her
In return I will take the soul
of the first body that crosses over
The woman agreed and went home
ready to return the next morning
The Devil worked all through the night
until the new day was dawning
The next day, amazed by his work
she arrived with her dog and a cake
The Devil rubbed his hand with glee
at the prospect of her soul to take
The cunning women took the cake
and threw it as far as she could
Her dog chased after it over the bridge
just as she knew he would
The Devil had been outwitted
he howled with fury and anger
He threw himself off the bridge
vanishing in a cloud of sulphur
Before he leapt into the depths
he left his handprint cast in stone
Should you pay a visit
I dare you to compare it with your own

Thanks, Julie. I hope the dog was ok.
