Small Things
A lonely young girl
has no neighbors her age
so she has to make do
to replicate play
no friends to play with
she has to begin
making up her own world
with imagination
her friends are green lizards
and gray doodle bugs
it's the smallness of things
that she dearly loves
she talks to them freely
builds them intricate homes
they are her companions
because she's alone
pretending is natural
a gift she received
she's happy in her world
just making believe
those creatures befriended
made others afraid
but oh what an impression
on her truly made
for now she's a grandma
her hair turning gray
but early habits
never quite go away
and it's no coincidence
that no matter her age
she's still loving small things
to this very day.
