FOOTBALL CRAZY

It is reported that Lincoln City Football Club has suspended the playing of its theme "The

Dambusters March" at its matches, offering the conflict in Ukraine as the reason.

.................................................................................

The City of Lincoln in its pride has boasted the Lincoln Imp

But now it seems that civic pride has gone a little limp!

Citing the conflict that's taking p[ace in poor war-torn Ukraine

Its football club has now announced that the so-familiar strain

Of it's famous music theme is sanctioned like some oligarch -

Its supporters will no long hear the rousing Dambusters March.

The reasoning is beyond the pale and far beyond a joke.....,

Yet another unasked example of football going "woke".

The spire of Lincoln Cathedral In the days of World War Two

Was a navigational point of reference for each homebound aircraft crew

And remains a sign of victory over arrogant tyrannical force

To remind us here at that all evil will eventually run its course.

Surely the same remnder applies to that March from Eric Coates

A heartlifting thrilling "two-fingers" raised whenever any tyranny gloats.

Signing off with a question: Did anyone consult the Ukrainians?
I find the assumption that they would be affronted by a piece
of music that commemorates a momentous deed by those engaged in a struggle against dictatorial forces in the causes of independence and freedom strains my credulity when the Ukrainians themselves are "engaged in a struggle against
dictatorial forces in the causes of independence and freedom".
Indeed, if known, I think they might take comfort from this
continued musical representation from a friendly power in their
own perilous predicament.

What next - the 1812 Overture?
SG - i noted the similar action by the Cardiff ensemble over the
"Little Russian" Symphony. No less jelly-kneed in my view.
GF - The comment about sirens is fair and I was mindful of
the observation of a Lincoln fan who was prepared to go along
with that decision but not with the decision to ban the music.
The Dambusters March does NOT glorify war, a false premise. Instead, it celebrates the extraordinary achievement of fifty
RAF air-crews, half of whom failed to return alive from their
mission. As for your other comments, henceforth I will
think of you as "The bloke who puts the woke in Woking" 😏.
Cheers..,

I find the poem entertaining and cleverly rhymed, MC, and I enjoyed it. The question of refusing to play certain music during this conflict is a tricky one. For instance, I saw that an orchestra would not play Tchaikovsky's 2nd Symphony, because the 'Little Russian' is considered as a derogatory name for Ukraine. Which doesn't change the fact that it is a wonderful piece of music and absolutely nothing to do with the war.
Having said that, I agree with Greg that it is understandable for Lincoln City to refrain from playing the Dambusters theme during such a violent and tragic conflict. Bad taste is not something to be banned in itself, but I understand why a fotball club would not want to be playing war-theme music at this time.

You don't think that the terrible war suffering in Ukraine might open Lincoln to accusations of bad taste in broadcasting a theme tune that glorifies war, eh, MC? And sirens, too? Well, coming from such a 'source', as you like to put it, I don't suppose you do. From a fully signed-up member of the 'woke brigade'. And proud to be so. And what other examples of football going 'woke' did you have in mind, pray? Anyway, here's a link to the BBC's story, to let people make up their own minds https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-60938930
