Hyacinth
A Mother’s Day gift
casually picked up at the checkout till
Three bulbs in a cardboard pot
took pride of place on my window cill
Steadily they grew taller every day
stout, sturdy and strong
Thick stems holding up large blue heads
surrounded by leaves wide and long
Revealing clusters of blue stars
fragrant florets burst wide open
Soon the air was filled with scent
a sweet, intoxicating potion
Now failing under the heavy weight
stems rest their celestial bloom
The bright blue colour starts to fade
still the spring perfume fills the room
A simple Mothers Day gift
a late purchase at the checkout till
Two weeks on they continue still
to brighten up my window cill
