First Date
First date
She wore leopard print
And red satin
He wore skinnies
He looked kinda Latin
They ate Caribbean
Jerk chicken
And spicy rice
They seemed comfortable
Together
Just like
Silk and leather
I thought they
Looked really nice
Seemed like they
Had lots to say
Took it in turns
And looked at each other
In an attentive way
One table back
Another story
He was casual
Jeans and shirt
She was dressed
In all her glory
He talked
A lot
She rolled her eyes
And smiled vaguely
Tugged at the dress
Designed to impress
Perhaps it was a bit
Too short
Maybe she’d tried
A tad too hard
Her efforts lost
On this effusive bard
Water and lard
Are not a good fit
Leopard print
And Latino skinnies
Left laughing
Hand in hand
Rolling eyes
And her garrulous friend
Tried to tread
On sinking sand
Before arriving
At an abrupt
And less
Convivial end
First dates
Can be difficult
To navigate
But we must keep trying
Because eventually
We may find
Our perfect mate.

A very clever detached observation, Clare.
