Save Ruskin’s View
Almost two hundred years ago
a scene was painted, captured in frame
Although so much in life has changed
elements of this image remain the same
The River Lune still flows to the ocean
sometimes shallow, sometimes deep
In the farmland hidden in the distance
the farmer tends his cows and sheep
The sun still shines down on the fields
rain clouds cast shadows on the fells
Gravestones stand in the Churchyard
St Mary's Church rings out her bells
Trees still grow strong, tall and proud
wild flowers flourish in the hedgerow
Grey stone walls stand the test of time
come sunshine, wind, rain, hail or snow
“A place naturally divine” Ruskin declared
The Lune Valley view is always a pleasure
I hope in two hundred years from now
this scene will remain a national treasure
I wrote this poem two years ago
before the famous view point was closed
It is now inaccessible
due the danger that has been exposed
The Brow pathway is eroding
due to the force of the Rive Lune
There is to be a consultation
and a decision will be made soon
Should the Brow be left to slip away
or subject to a temporary repair
A full solution will prove expensive
a million pound, if you have some spare!
Our town faces this dilemma
there is no easy option to take
But we must all take into account
access to this national treasure is at stake
