Under the Mackerel Sky
Under the mackerel sky
This is where we say
Goodbye
Times change
For you and me
Under this maudlin sky
Lovers are becoming
Strangers
From broken promises
Souls are freed
Look for me in the dappled light
My shadow will lead you
Into the moonlight
Such beauty pierces through
The silver scales ...
Those which adorn
This magnificent mackerel sky
Whisper my name
See how my memory
Turns to dust
Tired eyes
No longer hold
Images of lust
Corpses of love
Moulder in slow decay
Abandoned
By Hope
And trust
Betrayed
Now truth has turned
To rust
Under the mackerel sky
Lovers gather in mourning
As they watch their dreams
Fade and die
The scales have fallen
Blind eyes blink
In the broad day light
Love lies wrapped
In a golden shroud
Remnants scattered
Amoungst the clouds
Words no longer have value
Hearts no longer meet
Flowers have been scattered
Dreams float in fantasies
All torn and tattered
Under the mackerel sky
We say goodbye
To me and you
Here is where our love
Came to die.

I really liked this poem. Clare> Mackerel skies on dappled days.
. “I saw the gooseflesh on my skin. I did not know what made it. I was not cold. Had a ghost passed over? No, it was the poetry.” Sylvia Plath
