Time
Some say time is an illusion,
But I believe this not to be;
For time is present everywhere,
And waits to swallow you and me.
Β
Replacement is the key to time;
Others step in as it rolls by:
Our school, our work, our love, our home β
These possessions appear to fly
Β
Into the lap of someone else,
Who takes your desk and house and bed,
While you have seen the years consumed
And now look on, unfit or dead.

I would like to thank John B, John C and John S, as well as Holden, for their comments.
It's true that this is a rather gloomy piece, but I am fascinated by the passage of time and the inevitability of change. I often heard it said at work that no one is indispensable, and in the end time will dispense with everyone. Which is not to say that we can't enjoy ourselves until it happens!
