Dear Flyntland

I like your poem m'dear

but not enough to print it,

it's good that you don't make a fuss

but I don't think  you're one of us,

do I know you?

I think that I'd remember - we are so few.

Are you qualified?

do you teach by day and write by night,

where did you study?

Ah! Yes! I thought that I was right

your poem is so commonplace,

You're new, and I don't know your face

-  -  -  - but keep on trying.

Forgive me now I'm in a rush

my literary friends are waiting,

we will talk at length - - and then discuss

the joy of classical writing.

So now I know that you're not one of us

I'll say goodbye -

                                -   but keep on trying.

I like to help new poets.

Thank you Greg you make a good point, we can also 'talk' to the authors and read a wide variety of other poets.
My thanks also to M.C.
"is awarded with incomprehension" brilliant.

Most enjoyable - with that gut-punch" that rings true for me.
There is a certain amount of "arty-farty" meets "airy-fairy" in the
world of "professional" poetry. And borrowing from RJ's
view -
A Phd in advanced pretension
Is awarded with incomprehension ! 😉

A further observation ... far more people get to see your poems on Write Out Loud, than within the readership of individual poetry magazines. That is not to knock those poetry magazines, which are put together with care and diligence. It's just a fact.

Stephen I really loved your comment, thank you for it.

Russell your "rant" as you call it is much appreciated and I loved phD in advanced pretention.
As far as poetry is concerned I am at a complete disadvantage, having been 'educated' in a small (four classes) faith primary school (no secondary school) and having left at fifteen, I am completly out of my depth. I love words and the flow of words and I can sense authenticity. I don't understand everything that I read but I am free to 'feel' them.
Thank you for your most welcome comment.

Been here,
There seems to be this dichotomy where poetry in magazines is wanted to be appreciated by the masses but editors don't want poetry that is understandable by the masses, the editors believe that everyone should be bettering themselfs not just reading for entertainment they want the paradoxes, the words only a person with a PhD in advanced pretension will understand, the want to be challenged by thought as they read.
To hell with them, I want to write for myself and readers who want to understand not only the inner me but the outer world too
End of rant

Very good read - enough to be published, except for the reasons given! The title works really well with the poem.
