Austerity Returns

Austerity Returns

I have lived through years of austerity

in the long and distant past

Those post war days of rationing and frugality

when clothes were mended and food was scarce

Days, weeks, months and years of being without

bereft of the solace of television or mobile phones

Gardens designed to sport flowers were turned

into vegetable patches

People walked for miles to avoid the cost of a bus ticket

and libraries were full of books which were read

from cover to cover

I have turned back the clock seventy five years

but now I see difficult times ahead

Money is in short supply, luxuries foregone

and holidays taken at home instead of abroad

The pennies are being counted

and domestic life has regressed

Window shopping and fewer purchases

electricity and gas used sparingly

Days of anxiety and jobs lost

taxes increased and entertainment curtailed

We have travelled full circle

leaving behind us a bonanza of plenty

This change of fortune is not without some merit

as we once more value what we have

and not what we want

We have been brought to heel

and forced to face an unpleasant reality

It has become a time to re assess and revalue

to see our lives more closely

and take on additional responsibilites

To value others, to lend a helping hand

and to accept what many in this world

have never had or dreamed of having

◄ I need to see clearly now

All will be well ►

Frightening, as it brings back memories of hard times many thought were behind us. Great writing as always, Keith.

Thank you to all who liked this poem and especially to Helene, Uilleam, Kevin and Stephen for their comments. Kevin your comment describes well my present circumstances. We are going through a difficult time which I fear may be prolonged by external events, particularly with the war in Ukraine. I appreciate all those who have enjoyed this poem as you are all a source of considerable encouragement.

A good poem, Keith. Austerity is always relative.

I've always had to be tight with money (I'll rephrase that to careful) but lately I've had to take my frugality to further extremes.
These are indeed hard times.

Austerity used to be an aspect of life much to be admired amongst the Christian religious communities I knew.

It meant keeping life simple, avoiding distractions of mindless consumerism / entertainment.

Now the concept of "Austerity" has literally been perverted for evil ends.

Politicians have turned it into an instrument of cruelty as they seek to persuade us that paying taxes to pay for the NHS, Fire and Social Services is not for the rich.

The poor and vulnerable must learn to go without, so as to maintain the wealthy in the lifestyle to which they are "entitled".
