A Quiet Visitor While Sitting in the Patio

A hummingbird came visiting,

after the torrential rains stopped, under a sun intensely bright,

with blue sky wrapping around--

its wings were whizzing up & down,

like a silent drumbeat,

staccato flaps of joy.

Oh hummingbird,

my heart swelled

at the sight of you,

you came so close to me

as I sat under the

wind-torn patio umbrella,

a few seconds later you flew back to the tall tree branches,

closer to the sky,

further from me,

camouflaged in the green leaves, I searched for you

with happy eyes,

sweet sweet bird,

my day expanded with a smile from your unexpected visit.

It's strange how the sudden, even brief, presence of a bird (or any other creature) can have such an impact, Hélène. I love the way that your last line expands the poem.
