Doors

Here’s a door

Shut or open

It shuts me in or let’s me out

A door shuts in your face

Or stands in the way

There are things in doorways

Places , memories, people

Blocking the way

Looming and shifting , ghosts of the past

Trying to see through to the void beyond

Courage to keep it shut

Or courage to open it

To let in the breeze or to keep the comfort of fetid air

Open it

Look beyond

Searing light

Burning the cornea

I’m blind , stumbling into the unknown

But breathing the breath of freedom

Look back a smoke filled room

Dimly lit with dark corners

Lurking forms, shifting shadows

Shut the door

Lock and bolt

Gone forever

Blue water blue sky

Blue whale

The ocean beckons

Thank you Stephen
Freedom is what we all lack in some form or other 🙏

An impressive poem, Pete. It hints at freedom and all the possible obstructions.

Reminded of the cynical comment by Tommy Docherty: 'as one door closes, another one slams straight in your face.'
