I stand alone

Unseen, many gods remain concealed,

I tread life with reason as my guiding light,

Proud owner of a sceptic's heart,

Dogmas unbound, no ancient tomes reviewed,

My creed is doubt, in doubt I find my way,

With open eyes, the world is revealed

Unseen, many gods remain concealed

No prayers whispered, no insight divine,

I marvel at the cosmos and its starry field,

No deity orchestrates my day nor night,

Nature's laws, awes my stolen breath

Unseen, many gods remain concealed

No worship needed, nor celestial flight,

A path of reason, mysteries unpeeled,

No deity's hand to set my course aright,

Unseen, many gods remain concealed

I was always intrigued by the tale of "Doubting Thomas" in the Bible and in later life took the view that it was meant to ensure
that "faith" took precedence over a questioning mind. A favourite
aphorism has always been "Cynicism is the last resort of idealism". 😏
