Thoughts on Poetry

Poetry is like a woman in the simplest dress.

Poetry's cousins (prose, fiction, dissertation, etc.) require adornment,

whereas poetry is like a woman who puts on a mass of jewelry,

and then one by one

removes each piece

until she is wearing only

a singular sliver of gold or silver.

Poetry likes sparsity

but is not afraid of complexity.

Poetry is like breath,

essential,

but quiet in a room full of chatter.

Poetry is prayer,

poetry is a friend in darkness,

poetry is a beacon of light,

illuminating.

Thanks Manish for introducing me to the poetry of Charles Bukowski ("a poem is a city"). I am really enjoying reading his poems on line. He takes the mundane and makes it funny, with lots of wisdom.

Beautiful in its brevity, depth & wisdom - we should all resolve to be sparser!

Excellent analogy Helene! Less is always more. Never waste a word.
Well done good work. G

Helene you have excelled yourself with this poem. The allegory is perfect. Poetry is prayer and poetry is sparsity stand out for me as hitting the nail on the head. Very well done.
Thank you,
Keith

I loved your version of poetry, Helena!
Besides, Charles Bukowski's version i.e. "a poem is a city", I think this one's my new favorite now.
Thank you for this.
