Old Friend
I have wandered through the empty space of time
I have traveled from here to there and back again
Accumulating treasures and never spent a dime
All my wealth I would give away for a simple grin
A solitary path littered with the jewels of a memory
Some sparkled with the empty lure of fool’s gold
While the glowing grace that others gave for free
Is what kept me warm when the nights were cold
There were people who paused to shake my hand
And a few who stayed a while, then parted with a hug
I struggled forward through the deep and shifting sand
Occasionally my heart strings were given a gentle tug
At times my old friend I think of you, and it makes me smile
Life is a hard and thorough teacher and her lessons often cruel
But there are those who share the weight by carrying it a while
Those dusty footprints imprinted on a memory like a golden rule
The insanely demented souls who traverse the world like Specter’s
Attempting to dissuade the art of friendship along life’s temporal path
Are but forgotten ghosts floating through memories without their lures
Gentle comfort from thoughtful words removes the sting of their wrath
The grains of life’s memories create new forms in the shifting sand
Reshaping through the years as we face the winds of transformation
But as I blindly step forward in uncertainty, I feel the comfort of a hand
And I know that you are there my friend step for step until the journey’s done

A worthy tribute to that great unspoken companion of love.
