THEM AS LIVES LONGEST LEARNS MOST

entry picture

(A poem I wrote to wind up my fellow loony leftie Facebook chums, especially during those whacky Corbyn years when they thought political suicide attractive)

I used to turn up on them marches

Arms linked with the Trotskyist host

But now I tune in to the Archers

“Them as lives longest learns most”.

I wore all my badges and labels

The shouts and the slogans and words

I learned them just like my times tables

But really I went for the birds.

My passion was not allus honest

I carried the requisite books

But when trouble broke I was first gone-est

(You don’t want to spoil your good looks).

I introduced them ladies into

Thinkers like Engels and Marx

And then introduced my guzinta

As smaller fish are by the sharks.

‘Das Kapital’ allus impressed ‘em

That little red book wrote by Mao

I’d quote him as I undressed ‘em

(The one about seed and the plough).

Deception, of course, was all Coopey’s

And tantamount almost to theft

But it kept me supplied with my groupies

All sourced from the gullible left.

But ladies it’s time to no longer

Feel conned by the gist of this post

We all make mistakes when we’re younger

“Them as lives longest learns most”.

Thanks, JG. I think that’s what’s meant by the Red Wall. And thanks for the Likes, Reggie's Ghost, Aisha and Jordyn.

Reminds me of going to Labour Party club discos in the mid 1980’s. The girls growled at you if there was any hint of ‘want a drink, darling’ or ‘would you care to join me in this dance’.

It’s a bit of a stretch, MC; I was never a protester nor a rake. And thanks for the Likes, Stephen and Redbrick.

Wry - and right on from my varied rcollections of accompanying
numerous public gatherings. Being led astray has a range of
meanings, that's for sure. How about that one about "Wise after the event"? 😃
