Celebrate St George's Day

entry picture

April 23 what have you English got to say
Where are the celebrations nationwide
Hey ho it's St George's Day
Nowhere to run and nowhere to hide
A hero for the country for sure
A time to celebrate and wave the flag
A man to revere in  high esteem
Hardly a mention on the evening news such a drag
A bank holiday would be appreciated
A celebration across the nation
Would be a chance to be proud
Sing songs of democracy and freedom
Shout it from the rooftops right out loud
Love and respect to all religions and persuasions
Why cant we make our national day a big ocassion
But no we are so f****ng woke
What has become of our country
When you can't just be an ordinary bloke
Hastings, Agincourt, Waterloo, World wars one and two to name a few
We have lost our identity and that's a shame
Stand up and be proud its a patriots game

We know that dragons do not exist
So a man named George could not have killed one.
So is the whole thing a myth?
Probably, which is why we can't raise much enthusiasm.

Timely words. It can often seem that
any public event on behalf of anyone
but the English is OK with the chattering classes personnified
by that Labour front-bencher who
mocked a home-owner in the past for
displaying the national flag on their
premises. There has always been a
number who take satisfaction in this
way. Boorish indeed!

Hi Stephen- I was born in London of Irish parents, so being a Celt, patriotism is in my blood. Thanks for your feedback👍

Very good, Tom. As a long-time non-resident, I'm always looking for the good side of England and it is there, if only in nostalgia. It's a shame that the public face is so dominated by right-wing boorishness

Hi Greg - It is rather tongue in cheek. On reflection I should have put Waterloo instead of Hastings. One can live in hope lol. Thanks for your feedback👍

I'm sure this poem is being ironic. You and I know, Tom, that any big celebration would only end in a punch-up. Thankfully it seems to have passed relatively peacefully. And, er, I don't think most of us regard Hastings as a glorious victory!
