A short summer

They were refugees from the Costa,

escaping searing daytime heat

and wakeful night sweats

for Northumberland’s short summer.

Beaches that hardly seem crowded

even when the tide is in.

Shrieks of sandcastle excitement

amid the northern wind.

Thirsty hydrangeas soaking up the rain,

flagging hostas reprieved. Weather

as it used to be, while the south swelters.

And now they’re back in Spain.

It’s still August in the borderlands,

but already autumn’s here.

Made me think, Greg. I spend the day at a windswept Oval on London yesterday (with a jumper and light anorak) and felt frozen when I left.
Perhaps it's catching. Mind you, it will probably be 30° next week!

Northumberland's coastline is lovely...proper weather there.

Yes I’m sure. The little ones leave the biggest hole don’t they?

I'm not, really, Graham. I love the weather up here ... 'weather as it used to be.' The last two lines have a melancholic air only because the house seems a bit empty after our Spanish family have left.
