21st-century eulogy
I have no faith in faith
that gives little hope to the already hopeless,
Nor am I fascinated by fanaticism
or the intolerance shown by their obsessiveness.
No trust in grey suits with greyer faces,
stumbling forward from fumble to bumble,
elected despite the world-weary apathy.
Democracy grumbles, ultimately crumbles.
I applaud the science of science.
Others blank-faced interpret it vaguer.
Before us, stand the dumb-struck, struck dumb,
rampant ignorance drifting high like vapour
And what does that ignorance beget?
Crime without responsibility or regret,
groups with moralistic neglect,
parading masked, such a terrorising threat.
Take a moment to challenge their choices
Homeless refugees have already been evicted,
let’s not align our tempers to the change in climate,
but allow the hotheadedness to cool unrestricted
This world’s not theirs, not yours, but for us all,
whether deep sea, the wilderness, or the urban sprawl.
One day we all may rely on compassion’s call
Who knows which side our buttered toast will fall
