Donations are essential to keep Write Out Loud going

Life Blood

The life blood of the being of our world

Is thinking, creativity and art;

These bourgeon through our minds and through our veins

And make us feel uplifted in our heart.

Their practice may produce art few will like,

And writings with which many won’t agree,

But comfort’s not the point of inspiration,

At least not when society is free.

But those in power, of whatever hue,

May feign to be outraged by things that shock,

And undermine expression’s cherished path

By putting the performers in the dock.

There too many dissidents to name

Whose work calls out injustice and constraint.

Make space for all those flowerings to bloom;

Let loose free rein with music, pen and paint.

Thank you, Graham. Amen to that!

In a free society there must be a place for uncomfortable, even offensive, artistic expression. There is a dangerous trend towards discouraging and even banning works that people in power or positions of influence do not like. This approach eventually leads to the state or other vested interests deciding what people should watch or read. All authoritarian states crush free speech and free art.

And thanks to Red Brick, K Lynn, Tom, Yanma, Uilleam, Manish, David, Rudyard, Tobani/Nataiella and Marla for liking this.

As the ancient saying goes ‘the pen will always be mightier than any sword’.
Whilst none of us can like everything, we can, even if begrudgingly, appreciate good work in any of the arts and media sphere. WOL being an excellent example!
