Homelessness

Homelessness is dangerous,devastating and isolating.

The average age of death for people experiencing it frightening.

43 for women and 45 for men,

Some losing their lives early, who knows when?

People can become homeless not able to afford their rent,

Leaving prison or the army, onto the streets are sent.

Relationship breakdowns, losing a job,put people under immense strain,

Escaping a violent or abusive experience, forced in isolation to feel the pain.

Core homelessness continues to rise ,inciting considerable fear,

Breaking new records for people experiencing it every year.

Sleeping on the streets is not a lifestyle choice,

To bring an end to it,please raise your voice.

As homelessness in city centres confronts our eyes,

More visible and serious, continues to rise.

It's good to show kindness to a homeless guy,

Acknowledge his presence say "hello "or "hi."

I sometimes reach out with a yoghurt drink

A kind gift of calcium can build a link.

An excellent suggestion, Marla.

On the first day of 2025, widespread flooding in the UK,
On the second day, I've woken up to frost on the INSIDE of the car.....
According to some (who want to save us from the 'élites' ) homelessness is a 'lifestyle choice'....oh yeah, I'll have a bit of that!

A fine, humane poem, Hugh. I have posted one on the same subject - hopefully they complement each other.

Homelessness use to be in only in big cities. Now it is common place even in small towns. Your poem made me think.

This would be a good subject for a poetry challenge.

There but for the grace of God go I, Hugh.
Obscene levels of wealth, side by side with obscene levels of poverty....Capitalism at it's best.
