The Sunshine Boys

entry picture

The Sunshine Boys are chatting on the phone;

They claim that they are both concerned with peace.

But one of them is raining down his bombs,

While body counts on both sides still increase.

The other one appears not to remember

Who started this barbaric slice of hell;

He treats the culprit as a valued partner

And seems to have been captured by his spell.

The victims hide in shelters and mourn friends;

The double act says they cannot aspire

To any more than they already have,

Or else there will be chaos and more fire.

We know one wants his minerals and cash;

The other tends to favour slash and burn.

All that remains is for them to decide

Who will become the first to take his turn.

Thank you, Rolph, for your kind words. Trump seems at ease with authoritarian figures, probably because they have so much in common, such as only accepting election results when you win.

Hello Stephen,

Thank you for sharing The Sunshine Boys. The way you capture the hypocrisy and complicity of political figures, all while highlighting the devastating reality of conflict, is powerful. The contrast between the public narrative of peace and the destruction caused behind the scenes is striking. Your words offer a sharp critique of the greed and denial that so often fuel modern wars, and it left me reflecting deeply on the true cost of these actions. Great poem!
Regards,
Rolph

Thank you so much for your comments and support, Graham and Flyntland. In some ways, I am reluctant to try to satirise this situation, because humour can seem a poor response to the chilling reality.

And my sincere thanks to everyone who liked this poem.

If this incisive piece had been written anonymously Stephen I would have known it was one of yours! Great work at this most difficult and dangerous time.

I can't believe this is happening—how can it end? These giant egos conspiring together plunge us deeper into a situation that can only make the world more unstable.

Your poem is well-written and chilling.
