"Beware the Ides of March"

entry picture

Although the Chinese philosopher Li Yuang said that "When little men cast long shadows, then surely the Sun is about to set". But the well-known and chilling phrase "Beware the Ides of March" is of course found in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar:

Caesar:
Who is it in the press that calls on me?
I hear a tongue, shriller than all the music,
Cry 'Caesar!' Speak; Caesar is turn'd to hear.

Soothsayer:
Beware the ides of March.

Caesar:
What man is that?

Brutus:
A soothsayer bids you beware the ides of March.

Caesar:
Set him before me; let me see his face.

Cassius:
Fellow, come from the throng; look upon Caesar.

Caesar:
What say'st thou to me now? speak once again.

Soothsayer:
Beware the ides of March.

Caesar:
He is a dreamer; let us leave him: pass.

But a little later Cassius expresses his concerns over Brutus's intent:

"And it is very much lamented, Brutus,
That you have no such mirrors as will turn
Your hidden worthiness into your eye,
That you might see your shadow. I have heard,
Where many of the best respect in Rome,
Except immortal Caesar, speaking of Brutus
And groaning underneath this age's yoke,
Have wish'd that noble Brutus had his eyes."

And of course there appears to be parallels in most recent and past events to warn leaders of rash and irrational actions as we have seen between Volodomir Zelensky and Donald Trump. By next week we shall be observing the three year anniversary when on March 24th Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine, so where were the soothsayers in Russia then? Unfortunately, the two assasination attempts on Donald Trump did not succeed as it was decreed by God that Trump was required to change the direction that the United States was to become a monarchy hosting King Donald 1st and another colonial Empire extending its topography to Greenland, Mexico, and Canada!

Hello leonidas: Three years of Russian invasion of Ukraine in violation of international law were already over on 24 February. I like your poem - a nice idea.
