“The Bitter Cup” reflects the themes of enduring hardship and finding strength
in the face of suffering, inspired by Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s “Surrounded by Good Powers...”
The sonnet explores the idea of accepting life’s trials with quiet courage, symbolised by
the "bitter cup," and trusting that even through pain, we move towards light and renewal.
It echoes Bonhoeffer’s own spirit of resilience and faith, confronting darkness while
holding onto hope for a brighter future.
In remembrance of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was shot by Nazis in a concentration camp
80 years ago yesterday.
Surrounded by good powers, calm and bright,
We walk through days of joy and sorrow's weight.
Though darkened skies may try to cloud our sight,
We move with hope, defying fear and fate.
The past may linger, pressing on our hearts,
Yet in this moment, we remain steadfast.
The pain of life, though heavy, never parts,
We drink its bitter cup, though it be vast.
And when the light returns, we'll joyfully
Remember all we've lost, and then we find
The strength to move ahead, content and free,
With peace and love, forever intertwined.
In stillness, we will hear a greater sound,
A song of life, in which all hearts are bound.
