17½ + 1 Week
They enjoy a trip to the cinema,
They go dancing and bowling too.
He tries to fill the evenings
With lots of things to do.
Desire is eating them both up,
They know they will not last
Six weeks until they marry
Is not likely to go fast.
Her parents pleased she’s happy,
They approve of her new man.
In excitement she chooses a ring
And they become engaged.
But on Friday she catches him
In the arms of another woman.
It’s his sister-in-law congratulating
Him on his engagement.
But absurdly jealous,
She throws a scene,
And goes home on her own.
An evening of constant crying
And a night of tossing and turning,
With only a couple of hours sleep,
Her heart and soul are yearning.
And yet now in the morning
In deep shame she is burning.
How could she have behaved
In that dreadful shameful way?
She has to find her way to his flat,
She really must apologise.
In a short turquoise dress
Low cut against her breast,
She finds the way there,
Her emotions laid bare,
As she knocks at his door,
A sob is caught in her throat.
Tears spill from her eyes
Onto her open coat.
What will he say?
Will he turn her away?
Will he think her too young
To marry him now?
He opens the door,
Her voice is shaky.
Will he believe her vow?
Not to behave so again,
And might he possibly
Understand her pain?
