VE Day Party
VE Day Party
When we heard the news everyone rejoiced
on the works radio it came via Winstons voice
'Advance Britannia' said he.
The bonfire on the bomb site that night
boasted a dummy made to look at first sight,
just like old Hitler, hee hee.
We saw it being placed there when we walked to the park
earlier that joyous day, long before it got dark,
all of us singing brightly.
Five of us were on our way to the field by the station,
where they had decided to hold our celebrations,
finally we felt we were free.
There were so few men to go round at the party,
you could forgive a girl for dressing smartly,
and you know one of them was me.
Three barrels of beer had been rolled there,
they were all of them tapped with great care,
and I think they were 'supplied' for free.
A small band played old songs which we all joined in,
though some of our voices were little more than a din,
and old Tom played hits on his ukalale.
And we danced hand in hand, those without any man,
while a lucky few sneaked off behind the bandstand,
with their faces simply filled with glee.
So no, we didn't have our Vera or Formby for the treat,
there was no real fruit trifle or hot meat pies to eat,
but now we knew we'd have some eventually.
VE Day we're all bound to remember,
from that May until our last December,
And we'll party because we are free
