The void

If there’s one thing we all try to avoid

And thinking is an obstacle to this

It is the contemplation of the void

More than the deadly dark and deep abyss

More than our partner’s final Judas kiss

More than the fires of hell Jesus will roam

Dante and Virgil’s literary bliss

Obliteration? More like cosy home

Seen Naples with Vesuvius’ vanished cone

Impervious to new life, life destroyed

Do we mourn our ancestors in the seas

Pre-Cambrian invertebrates in foam

Bubbling on grassless shores? Are they annoyed?

I doubt it, because ignorance is bliss

Note: The reference to Jesus in hell relates to the prophecy that he will open the gates of hell and free its inmates when the time comes - not to him being sent there permanently (of course)...

Interesting really that the title of this sonnet suggests going into the unknown.

Thanks for your compliment on my work. Of course you may say so.
As for "the end of the world thing." Although it makes for great debate. I'm not getting into it through this comments section.
I still think it's rubbish. It's the end of the world every day for somebody or other.

HI, Antonio

This is not to scare anyone it is in a Bible and also the Mayas prediction for that particular year. There has been estimated that the Earth is shifting on its axle so the sun may enter into the Milky Way and that has been found by many physicist including Einstein...All based on the science, will live and see...Olympics!!
I love to see that as well. Olympics are my favourite aside the Manchester Football Team, love those footballers.

Thank you,
Zuzanna

You have such a way with words Antonionioni.
"The end of the world is nigh." and all that rubbish. Put there to scare the living daylights out of us poor folk.

The lava i "saw" was very cleansing. Certainly nothing injured, maimed or murdered.
Your sonnet certainly kicked us in the imagination, that's for sure. That surely can only be a good thing?
lots o love and vivid imagination. Janet.xx

Hello, Antonio

You have been reading about the Final days in the Year 2012 or what? -- Smile.
There are predictions of the End of times and that picture I had in mind reading your poem. Well done with a Religious twist to it as well as the picture of Naples.
Magnificent Vesuvius with lava is bad for those who live near.
I like this poem...Very creative!

Thank you,
Zuzanna

Powerful stuff, have to admit, it's a bit over my head too- doesn't take a lot! Sounds good stuff though all the same! cheers Jeff

Although i really haven't a clue what you're trying to say in this one Antonionioni, i did get a strong image of red, fiery lava spilling out across a vast space in time. The desert of Arabia?
Somehow that doesn't fit but it was the first thing which sprouted into my very stupidly thick brain today.
