George Best - football legend
Fame is such a fickle dame,
That in her clasp who would dare claim
To stay the same?
Like love, Time holds fame in its hand
And cruelly pours away the strand
Of golden sand.
The wise man smiles and winks an eye,
And nods to bid his time goodbye,
Not asking why.
But skill, like art, survives the years,
Evoking joy and countless cheers,
And grateful tears.
It lives within the living breast
Of anyone who was a guest
At the feast of football from the Best.

I only saw him twice, both times at Nottingham Forest.
When he first got the ball he approached Forest's full-back Peter (Mary) Winfield and feinted left, feinted right and feinted left again, only to find Winfield still there from the first feint! He didn't make the same mistake again.
On the second occasion he was earning a crust at the end of his career with Fulham. I left 10 minutes from the end with Fulham leading 2-0 to buy a pair of trousers before the shops shut. As I walked by the Trent I heard the crowd roar 3 times. Forest won 3-2!
