slave labour for the church 2oth century style

entry picture

Young girls; when first they were incarcerated

By tyrants dressed as penguins full of glee

Shouted at,abused with no sign of forgiveness

Buried as old dears with  housemaids knee

Last one closed;(just pause ,slave labour on our doorsteps)

I think, not long after nineteen ninety three

Washday everyday, time off (of course) for prayers and mass

Generating copious profits for the holy see

From dawn till dusk no kindness shown, no mercy

Hypocrisy though shown daily to one and all

Fine food for meek nuns and priests to savour

Bland food for life's sinners in stark halls

These pitiful poor creatures  condemned to  slavery

Kept under wraps ,out of sight ,oh yes,and out of harm

Forgotten deliberately by kin and even their close neighbours

No appeals process, no-one to call or raise alarm

All the while the church's coffers swelling

Slave labours cost effective bar the food

Beatings or a thrashing never harm did

Besides its a sure way to stop their glances rude

Even in death no dignity afforded,

No flowers, wreaths, or loved ones saying bye

Their lot, to lie in unmarked graves for decades

Till builders dig em up spark hue and cry

Survivors till this day they live amongst us

Living life and dealing with their pasts

Tortured souls who firsthand had their live's robbed

Because a priest, nun or parent decided that that's that

As for the laundries, all are gone now

They stood, as prisons more then a century

Inflicting  continuous suffering, pain and sorrow

No human rights or wrongs just misery

No trials for the perpetrators, no fetters , bonds

No inquisition apportioning the blame

No culpability or apology from Rome

Its enough to make survivors go insane

The sad thing is its still hushed up not open

A bitter taste is what it leaves for you and me

Not condoned from scripture only condemned

Aren't we glad we weren't in a Magdalene laundry

By request, typos:

Besides it(apostrophe)s a sure way to stop their glances rude

Tortured souls who firsthand had their live's robbed (don't need that apostrophe)

They stood, as prisons more then a century (should that be 'than'?)

It(apostrophe)s enough to make survivors go insane

The sad thing is it(apostrophe)s still hushed up not open

See ya next week!

There's still some typos ;p Never mind me, I'm a terrible pedant.

Okay, I understand re the phrasing now. Thanks :) Not that you have to explain anything to anyone, but it did seem different to the rest of the poem.

Hey, would be great to see you at the Wigan WOL! It's next Thursday, at the Tudorhouse pub - erm, I think it's not far from the bus station. I'm not a local though so not the best person to ask.

If you're on facecrack, btw, WOL have a page on there, as well as the Tudor event. Just search on there for Wigan WOL and it'll come up :)

Aha - right from the start I was thinking of the Magdalene laundries - and then I get to the end and it's stated.

I liked this, but I THINK it may perform better than it reads, as there doesn't seem to be a definite flow as such and that may well come out when you read it yourself - sometimes these things do.

There's some unusual placing of words, like 'harm did' and 'glances rude'. Is there a reason why you arranged them like that?

There are a number of typos in this - worth going through again and fixing...'lives's robbed' is one, and there's a capital E in 'Its Enough to make survivors go insane'. You might have a reason for that too but I can't see any significance.

It's a story that needed telling so nice one for that. I remember watching the film The Magdalene Sisters and just being ripped in two by it. Actually sobbing. I believe that the reality was in fact MUCH worse than depicted in the film - which is horrifying.
