THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE

The malevolent heed what the malignant say,

And send their converts out to prey;

And like the donkeys, how they bray!

Is THAT your idea of a hero?

Love, compassion, common sense,

Mean nought to them, it's "self-defence",

Disciples of a pious pretence -

Is THAT your idea of a hero?

Maim you, bomb you, shoot you dead,

In your heart or in your head,

In the street or in your bed -

Is THAT your idea of a hero?

They dare not recognise their sin,

These killers of their kith and kin,

But justify the need "to win" -

Is THAT your idea of a hero?

What care they for righteous scorn,

Who live to slaughter on the morn,

The mother and the child unborn?

Is THAT your idea of a hero?

The malevolent heed what the malignant say,

And send the killers out to prey;

And like the donkeys, how they bray!

Is THAT your idea of a hero?

Nicely nice, this, MC. Love the rhythm of it, and the repetition of the last line is like a succession of hammerblows. Why I think a better title would be 'Defender Of The Faith' I couldn't say though, unless it's because the irony of it appeals to me. Or perhaps it's because whenever I see the word 'terrorist', I think, 'another man's freedom fighter', and this poem definitely doesn't make me want to be anybody's freedom fighter, no matter the cause. Christ, I can be persnickety sometimes. Ignore the cavil: it's still a corker of a poem.

Great poem and the repetition of the last line only added to the content.

M.C. is my idea of a hero. How can you be allowed to be so consistantly good. It's not fair. I'm going to complain to the Poetry Police. You must have something naughty up your pen. Now spit it out... or else! Ta much, Nick.

Nice timely piece though I suppose the message and sentiments could equally apply to any age. I always prefer the order of rhythmic flowing stanzas and this is great in that respect.
