Aldeburgh Poetry Festival

entry picture

7 ?" 9 November 2008… and despite the credit crunch and the plethora of other festivals, our boldly imaginative programme has attracted reassuringly healthy advance bookings (average 71% across 31 events). This year’s Festival promises to be its usual feast of poetry excellence with a programme designed to intrigue and enlighten. Tickets are still available for most events ?" so it’s not too late to escape to Suffolk’s irresistible seaside town for the complete poetry weekend.

We welcome our first Chinese poet ?" Yi Sha ?" a poetic subversive and commanding performer who arrives from Beijing with his Australian translator, Simon Patton. Together, they’ll offer a fascinating insight into contemporary Chinese poetry. Check out Yi Sha’s forthright reading style:

The uncompromisingly candid Afrikaans poet Antjie Krog will cast a fierce poetic light on South Africa’s political, social and linguistic landscape. And in Aldeburgh’s long-standing tradition, we bring two astounding Americans to the Festival platform ?" Barbara Hamby and David Kirby ?" whose zestful, hilarious, endlessly curious narratives are really something else.

The multi-cultural home-front will be led by Australian Clive James, Irish-born Dennis O’Driscoll, Iranian Mimi Khalvati, and Hungarian-born George Szirtes. Plus poets from all over the UK, including Gerry Cambridge (Scotland), Alan Jenkins (London), and the numinous Pauline Stainer (Suffolk).

Late Programme Change

With great regret and due to serious ill health, Matt Simpson has yesterday had to withdraw from the Festival.

Matt Harvey replaces him at the Family Reading on Friday at

Alan Brownjohn replaces him at the Saturday morning Reading (with Tiffany Atkinson and Dennis O'Driscoll) and will also deliver the Close Reading at on Saturday and an intriguing new Craft Talk ?" Poetry into Fiction and Back Again ?" on Sunday at . We are most grateful to Alan for stepping in at such short notice.
