55) Fifteen years ago La Kiva’s open mics begun

Last night was open mic 791

I was there reading my latest poetry score

A selection from my current tour

I started off but thought ‘oh dang!’

The cellphone in my pocket rang

Did the audience think it was part of the act; by the way I did react

Instead of saying hello I said “Yo”

The audience enthused then became amused

As I said you may not know it,

You’ve reached the cellphone of an English poet

Shortly after, the audience broke into laughter

The caller I couldn’t comprehend, so brought the call to an end

Did the audience think ‘well, the poets a comedian as well’

I carried on and read some more then was asked for an encore

So I read from a book I’d brought along a poem called ‘Walkin’ the Song

An’ drove away on that Texas night

Thinkin’ the Rhymey Limey done alright
