Saving the Earth, one poem at a time
Write Out Loud is supporting the Rio+20 summit on sustainable development from 20-22 June in the best way we can, by urging folks to write poems about it. Write Out Loud’s founder Julian Jordon is asking participants at Write Out Loud Marsden - held coincidentally on 20 June - to try to come up with a poem on the perils the planet faces. Either one you have written, or one you know of, or two on the subject. At a previous Write Out Loud Marsden Tim Padmore of Kirklees Campaign Against Climate Change talked about the Rio+20 summit, and it was agreed to use that as a theme for the June open-mic poetry event - Marsden Write Out Loud Poetry night at the Library, Marsden Mechanics’ Institute, Peel St. Marsden, 7.30pm – 9.30 pm, £2. Below is more information and links you might find helpful if you fancy using this as a theme for your writing groups, schoolwork or open-mic events. We would also welcome such poems on our blogs on Write out Loud. From Tim Padmore of Kirklees Campaign against Climate Change: ”The Rio Connection is a chance to build on this grassroots movement. See the video: http://www.stopclimatechaos.org/rio-connection These events will connect global and national sustainability issues with those in their community, inspire new people to talk about sustainability, and encourage our politicians to sign up to a sustainable future by supporting the Rio Declaration. "The UK should lead the world in the transition to a fair and green economy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting biodiversity and creating jobs and opportunities to reduce poverty and inequality here and overseas. The Rio+20 summit is an important milestone for this ambition, and the UK should engage constructively, with a view to uniting governments across the world behind a vision for a global green and fair economy which benefits all people. “We must lead by example at home by delivering on the commitments in our groundbreaking Climate Change Act whilst showing international leadership to increase the EU's 2020 climate targets. At the same time we must help the world's poorest communities adapt to the effects of climate change, invest in getting clean energy to all people, and protect rainforests."
