Children

I used to carry three of the five up to bed

They’d say ‘Daddy, daddy, please stay’

But I would go away and work.

Suddenly we were semi-detached

They’d flown the nest, gone way,

And what I wouldn’t give

For one day with them

When they were little and I was young.

Telling them stories, singing songs,

Getting along.

Beautiful evocation of understandable regret in human terms. Life has its way.

'semi-detached' is contextually well chosen.

When they were little and I was young - that's a nice reversal of expectation. Time affects us all - well expressed.

The final two lines are lovely. The need for complication well avoided.

Best

Chris

Would winding up include treating them to a few volts of electricity, TC?

This is a lovely poem John. It's nice to see a poem celebrate the best things in life.
