song - the season's over...

entry picture

the season's over

everybody has gone home

the seasons over

leaving me here all alone

summer was fun

but now it's done

the season's over....

the shops stand empty

and the cafe's closed it's doors

the sandcastles have all been washed away

a pair of old flip flops are lying in the hall

waiting for another sunny day

the season's over

no more footprints in the sand

the season's over

nobody here to hold my hand

no wonder I am down

St Ives is Lonely Town

the season's over....

there's no-one here to share my fish and chips

there's no one here to taste my salty lips

I was so very sad you couldn't stay

my bathing costume's been put away

the season's over

the winter bus timetable's new

the season's over

christmas decoration's due

the nights are drawing in

winter will seem grim

the season's over.......

the season's over and the rain is beating down

even the Digey is wearing a frown

there's lots of doggies running on Porthmeor

but I'm just howling 'cos you're not here

the season's over the smell of woodsmoke in the air

the season's over as I look at your empty chair

you've gone back to your life

you've gone back to your wife

the season's over .....

the season's over .....

the season's over .....

Wow, I like this, Ann. Great voice you have. Shades of Cleo Laine. It just needs a bit of arranging for clarinet and this could be the star of our Poetry Jam at next year's Marsden Jazz Festival. Love it.
Verse two, I suggest you remove the apostrophe from <its>. Can't help it, sorry.
Oh, and, it's always autobiographical. :-)

Having just returned from a very wet week in Cornwall this struck a strong chord with me. Verse four is classic!

Thanks MC & Anthony. As to the music, it's some sort of mixture of tunes I expect - I think there's a bit of When a Nightingale Sang in Berkely Square in there somewhere. It just came into my head with the words one day when I was walking on the beach. Thanks for sharing my fish and chips Anthony! :)

Ann,

You silky voiced siren you! Pucker up - I don't mind a little seasoning with my osculations! (But I have to say that the refrain you are singing to is driving me crackers, trying to work out what it is!) How's the scene going down in St. Aggies? Could they stand a return visit sometime?

Regards,
A.E.

With vinegary XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX's :)

I enjoyed this - as someone brought up by the
sea in neighbouring Devon. There is something
in its style that brought back that popular
song...
"The party's over..it's time to call it a day..."
remember?
There's a distinctive melancholy about a
holiday resort by the sea that's "out of season"...like a provincial town centre on a Sunday!

A bit of tongue in cheek melancholy from me (not autobiographical btw!) The Digey is a street in St Ives and Porthmeor is a lovely beach :)(dogs allowed in winter - only early morning and in the evening in summer - but that's another story!)
