Things Are Ticking Over Nicely- a country song I have written for Bush Pig

I’ve been married to Jackson Junior for nigh on fifteen years

We’ve a mortgage on our semi that’s never in arrears

Our kids are grade A students, say their prayers and are polite

I guess that what I’m saying is-

Things are quite alright

Can’t complain, I can’t complain

I’ve been happy and I’ve been sane

We’ve never had a health scare

And are kids aren’t over-weight

I suppose that what I’m saying is-

My life is really great

I go to work each morning at the doctor’s surgery

Take the calls and make appointments for the ill and the needy

Then I leave the doctors smiling and I get into the car

And pick the kids up from the High School, which isn’t very far

Can’t complain, I can’t complain

I’ve been happy and I’ve been sane

Jackson's faithful and attentive

And never raised a hand

I guess that what I’m saying is

Things are really grand

When Jackson’s done accounting

In the city for the day

He returns home with some flowers

Tucks the kids in then he’ll say-

‘My love you are more beautiful

With each and every day’

So I guess I am so lucky

Things are more than just okay

Can’t complain, I can’t complain,

I’ve been happy and I’ve been sane

One time we had an argument

But we sorted it all out

There isn’t really anything to write a song about.

Thanks MC. I wanted to write an antithesis to a female archetypal country song where the woman has an ok life, not great but not tortuous in any way. I think your line is funnier yes! Has more order to it, thanks.

Hi Cathy - as a lyric writer I enjoyed this. It has a good word rhythm and the only real "jarring" part is the "for the ill and the needy" finish to that particular line. That choice of words loses the rhythm and seems awkward. How about "for each available GP" - or similar words that keep the rhythm?
Best wishes...
