Ape Shit

entry picture

Donkeys years ago, when the kids were little, we visited La Palmyre Zoo in France.

The apes were housed in an area about the size of a football pitch with a moat surrounding it, enveloped by  a smooth, concave wall about 12 feet high.  Spectators could watch from the top of the wall.

While we watched an ape ambled up to the moat, squatted, shat on its hand and threw it at us.  How we laughed!

Only later did it occur to me that the ape knew exactly what it was doing.  Specifically, it recognised:

1                 Its own captivity

2                 Who its captors were

3                 The futility of escape

4                 The significance, therefore, of its gesture

5                 The nature of “disgust” – (why else did it throw shit and not a stone)

The intellectual sophistication of what it did disturbs me still.

It was the saddest thing I’ve ever seen.

Hi john, I didnt mean to insult prisoners in jail and stereotype them, its just that I remember Talking to prison officers who'd
had shit thrown at them or smeared in their faces by prisoners in jail!for some strange reason it just brought it to mind !
As for the guilt thing there can be no guilt for Monkeys, even cheeky ones.

This is very sad John but it reminds me of life in HMP for some people, especially the 5 points you make. As for the poor animals in Zoo's what did they do to deserve to be caged and poked fun at, they are prisoners for our entertainment, but as Isobel states we take our children to see them, Q how would we like to be put in Zoo's? Oh please don't get me started on the rights and wrongs of domesticating animals, Q does this bag of dog dirt belong to anybody? regards Paul.

If people didn't go, zoos wouldn't be there etc etc!

This is the saddest thing you've ever written, to my memory at least, John. I like the clarity of your thoughts, laid out like that - there's no arguing the point.

I went to visit a monkey sanctuary in Cornwall over the summer. They'd done the best they could with some pretty traumatised monkeys - but they weren't allowed to have babies - what kind of life is that? It's no kind of life, it's an abnormal life - you wouldn't wish it on a rabbit, and yet we do, time and time again.

I hate the thought of any caged animals - and yet ever so often I take my kids to a zoo - cos they like to see the animals up close - so who's the hypocrite?

John, you've answered a question that's been on my mind forever . . . "What should our natural reaction be to politicians?"
Maybe, when WE recognise . . .

As always - cause for thought.

Regards,
A.E.
