The Adaptation.

The Adaptation

From the front step as the evening ends

Irene waves to stalwart friends,

then locks the door and slips the chain

and turns to thoughts of Len again.

Stirring warming milk she thinks

she’s poured enough to make two drinks

and wonders widows ever learn

the dear departed don’t return.

Thank you all. Once you get your eye in, the penultimate line works, i think. It's based on something my aunty said to me just after she was widowed.

Nicely done. Love the 'stalwart friends' says so much in a couple of words.
I see wher JC's coming from inre your last 2 lines . I took me few re-reds to understand it as "I'm surprised widows ever learn"
I love this poem.

Very poignant image, Travis. Made more powerful by its brevity.
Maybe I'm not reading it right but the last two lines don't seem to quite hang together (it's probably me).
