It sometimes is a testing trial

To think of things that make me colon close bracket

And when life really gets me down

My face displays a sullen colon open bracket

It should be easy, don’t you think

To see life through a cheeky semicolon close bracket

But that eye’s never winked for me

They both close, and I cannot see

So I’ve decided, what I’ll do

To keep expressions pure and true

Is knock punctuation on the head

And use some fucking words instead!

great poem Simon, and very clever...this made me smile in a semi-colon closed bracket kind of way. it's on a par with lol and other horrors (that i use too)

Thanks, Clarissa and Janet. I thought seriously about using the actual symbols (actually, not 'seriously', this isn't a serious poem) and it would read the same when I performed it. But I thought it makes it slightly more cryptic this way when read on the page. Also, the poem is a sort of protest against glib emotional symbolism - I have never typed one in my life, and I'm not about to start now. :-)

Why not just include a smiley instead.
Or a browny frowny.

Nice poem Simon,

Thanks Andy. It's usually a no-no to write really obvious rhymes but for this poem it was absolutely necessary.

This is class !!

I love the way you write the punctuation marks in full. It really highlights today's SMS culture.
