Southbank poets pay tribute at 'I Have a Dream' anniversary
Poets Charlie Dark, Deborah Stevenson, Dizraeli, Hollie McNish, Jacob Sam La-Rose, Malika Booker, Salena Godden, Vanessa Kisuule, and Zena Edwards will be joining with members of America’s legendary Last Poets to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jnr’s I Have a Dream speech at London’s Southbank Centre on Wednesday 28 August. The Architects Of Our Republic event, organised by Apples and Snakes, is described as an “open-air collision of words, music and film celebrating one of the greatest moments in modern history”. It starts at 2pm with films and live performances in the Clore Ballroom. At 5pm there’s a chance to learn a selection of freedom and protest songs, followed by a march from Jubilee Gardens singing the songs. At 7pm the Last Poets, whose roots were in the US civil rights movement and who have been cited as one of the earliest influences of hip-hop, will join Charlie Dark, Salena Godden, Hollie McNish, and Dizraeli with spoken word, music and a choir. The event will also be live streamed. More details
