Facebook U Turn

all the facebook message boxes
jostle for attention
people I don’t really know
pop up and go
the complexity overthrows me
sometimes, must be my age
and the go slow
of the applications, the internet
so often stutters
freeze frames the page
and pop up utterances
they elude the beta blockers, pop
and we curse the screen
speak to it like it’s the porthole
to utopia, its not
its just a stack of chat boxes
of Andy Warhols
famous on facebook, self publish, twitter
useful sometimes, on the whole bitter sweet
puts the bottoms on the seats
but the wrong ones
office furniture is on the whole,
clinical,
solitary.
we are forgetting how to live
call it evolution
I’m not sure what step it brings
or what it gives
to enrich my life
leaves me feeling plastic
as though I never really met them
these pop up people, these additions
these acceptances, XYZ accepts you as a friend
friend? Never met them
most likely never will
the chatbox is a protein pill, a replacement
for friendship and real life encounters.
I met some of them once,
they were a cornflake disappointment
all soggy
I miss the crispness of real friendship
bonds built on life
and not the keyboard

◄ Living in another world to you

I read this a few times and for the most part it is true...
I always try to put a positive spin on everything though...
Sometimes a chat can spark an interest that can lead to friendship...
Online you only get certain facets of a person's personality...
True friendship takes time to develop so you have to have a good sense about people and take the time to get to know them...
however it was that you may have met...

Hi Peter,
this struck a chord in me for the sheer truth in it.
"the chatbox is a protein pill" yes, and it can be as addictive as opium or other narcotic.

I don't do facebook, it has no attraction for me whatsoever, but i am a an active member on something similar which is supposedly for like minded people. I had in excess of 30 friends on one site where people used the invite system to make friends, or was it to gain points they could earn on the site? Truth is, they invited me and not the other way around. Seems i had something they wanted but didn't realize they actually have to work for it before they can gain the experience for themselves. It closed down recently and only one of the 'friends' has bothered to make personal contact. Boy am i glad i didn't invite the others round for a knees up. (so to speak.)

Ah well. Such is life!
I moved on and wish them well when they do too. :-)

That's what i love about your work. It sparks a reaction from me which often follows with deep thought. Good stuff Peter.
