Bejan Matur, pictured, is a Turkish poet, author and journalist of Kurdish heritage. While reading law at Ankara university, she was arrested and imprisoned under false political charges. She has since published several collections of poetry to critical acclaim in Turkey and internationally, and her work has been translated into 24 languages. On Sunday 20 July she will be taking part in an English PEN event, Literary Activism: Is Poetry the Strongest Form of Protest?, at the Royal Festival Hall on London’s Southbank, with Ukrainian poet, novelist and essayist Serhiy Zhadan, Tamil poet and activist Kutti Revathi (India),  and hip-hop artist, poet and reporter Mohamed El Deeb (Egypt). The event is part of the Southbank Centre’s four-day Poetry International.
