THE SNP
Historically, there have been moves to secure "independence" for Scotland by those who
seem to see a vision of a sovereign country - notwithstanding the alliance that has bound it to
the rest of the U.K. for centuries. There was the ill-fated alliance with France to place "Bonnie
Prince" Charlie on the throne - and this has surely been the prime example of the determination
to align Scottish fortunes with Europe rather than with its nearest neighbours.
Then, during WW2, the SNP of the time actually sought to negotiate with the Nazis just in
case the Allies lost the war - a matter of public record and a rather worrying notice of intent
from the political party that even now presents itself as the proper "ruling party" in Scotland
- independent or not.
One wonders just where the SNP would take Scotland should the vote for independence be
"yes" - and how it would affect the rest of us in the British Isles.
