Family odyssey: Hannah Lowe's tale of the first ship that brought Caribbean migrants to Britain
Hannah Lowe, whose debut collection, Chick, was shortlisted for the Forward and Aldeburgh best first collection prizes and Seamus Heaney first collection prize, is launching a new pamphlet, Ormonde, a poem cycle that charts the 1947 journey of the first ship to carry immigrants from Jamaica to the UK, before the better-known Empire Windrush. On board the Ormonde was the poet's Jamaican-Chinese father, ready to start a new life in a new country. The poems are accompanied by unique personal and historical archives. The pamphlet is published by Hercules Editions, which has launched a crowd-funding campaign to raise funds to produce the book, and also to help stage special events in the coming months, many in conjunction with the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton. The launch is on 4 November at Brixton East Gallery in south London at 6.30pm. Entry is free but RSVP to tamar@herculeseditions.com
