My Inner Child

My inner child

Stamps her foot

She wants attention.

She hates it when others

Do ‘better’ than she does

She feels afraid.

My inner child

Is competitive

Is jealous

Is bitter

Is sulky.

She wants to point fingers

She wants to criticise

She doesn’t want you

To do well.

Because then she

Might get forgotten about

Again.

She says

I’m still here.

Please don’t leave me

Please see me

Please hear me

Please love me

No matter what.

She cries out

Am I enough?

Please, please say that I am!

She feels desperate

She feels afraid.

I take her in my arms

I say I am here now

I love you

You are safe

You will always be enough

And I will never ever leave you

My love.

I really enjoyed this poem. It is universal, well-considered and fluent. If the mood ever takes you, you might like to check out my poem 'Trilogy of Heroes' as the final part deals also with this theme, shared experiences and all that. I'll check out the year, and post a note if you are interested.

"My child spread your arms, close your eyes and breathe deeply, picture flowers and running water."
