Where did honesty go

when we made our pleading hopeful plans

and met those men with suits and ties that breezed into our lives

and helped us through those difficult unrealistic half - imagined schemes

that paid their wages so.

 

Where did honestly go

as we signed our hopeful lives away to sweat and toil

and see our futures disappear in unrealistic number pits

as those men in ties and suits racked up their little game?

 

How did we price our dreams on the sliding ghastly scale

and did we give those experts trust and did our dreams prevail.

 

Where are they now? I wonder as I see the wear and tear

in mirrors of ageing discontent how did they dare?
